What A Bill Is


  • A bill is The idea is called a Bill and writing it up is called drafting it. It is the same as when you write a draft copy or some work before you do a good copy.

  • The Bill has its first reading in Parliament. It is read by the MP who supports it. This is the first time MPs can vote for or against it.

  • The Bill is sent to a Select Committee. The committee studies it in detail. Any interested person can submit ideas on the Bill to this committee.

  • The Bill is now signed by the Governor-General and it becomes an Act of Parliament and therefore one of the laws of our society.
